Maybe all the fans should unit and call the team the UofD and let the school call it's self what ever it wants, kind of like ND.

I was wearing my Detroit Tigers facemask the other day and a young (20-ish) couple said, “Go Tigers! Are you from Detroit?” I said, “Yup, born there. Graduated from the University of Detroit.” The young lady corrected me: “You mean the University of Detroit Mercy.”

Graduated from the University of Detroit.” The young lady corrected me: “You mean the University of Detroit Mercy.” I generally adhere to the party line and call the school “the University of Detroit Mercy” or “Detroit Mercy” when referring to the institution in current context. But if you ask me where I graduated from (in 1977, pre-consolidation) or how I reference the Titan football teams that played a century ago, I always say “University of Detroit.” If someone chose to “correct” me, I would respectfully beg to differ. I admit to wincing a bit when I read online somewhere that Spencer Haywood was an All-American in 1969 at “Detroit Mercy.”

I do that, too, Rogo. But on the other hand, if you ask who the Detroit football Titans beat in their 1928 championship season among the victims was Michigan State. Right? Except that they were Michigan Agricultural College in 1928. (And not a member of the Big10, either.) So I think that generally college sports team names go by the current college ID to avoid confusion.

Titan Basketball 2020 Branding Survey
I recently surveyed 23 media outlets to see how they refer to the Titan basketball program as we enter the 2020-21 season.
This year’s survey included 20 of 22 media outlets carried over from last year, plus three additions. The two subtractions were Athlon and Street & Smith as both did not publish an annual preview magazine for 2020-21; the three additions covering college basketball are YardBarker, Last Word on Sports, and College Sports Madness.
In the group of carryovers, four outlets flipped from “Detroit Mercy” to “Detroit,” and three that did the opposite, i.e., they switched from “Detroit” to “Detroit Mercy.”
Examining the three addition to this survey, two use “Detroit” and one uses “Detroit Mercy.”
(Of the outlets not included in the current survey, Athlon had used “Detroit” in 2019, Street & Smith went with “Detroit Mercy.”)
The new totals for 2020: 57% of surveyed outlets now use “Detroit” and 43% use “Detroit Mercy.” In 2019 it was split 50/50. In 2018 the breakdown was 58% “Detroit “ and 42% “Detroit Mercy.”
Using “Detroit” (57%) 13
1. Lindy’s (unchanged) 2. NBC Sports (unchanged) 3. CBS Sports (unchanged) 4. Ken Pomeroy (unchanged) 5. Hoops HD (unchanged) 6. Massey Rating (unchanged) 7. T-Rank College Basketball (unchanged) 8. Three Man Weave (changed) 9. Sports Illustrated (changed) 10. CBB Central (changed) 11. Mid-Major Madness (changed) 12. YardBarker (new for 2020) 13. Last Word on Sports (new for 2020)
Using “Detroit Mercy” (43%) 10
1. ESPN (unchanged) 2. USA Today Sports (unchanged) 3. Busting Brackets (unchanged) 4. Sagarin (unchanged) 5. RealtimeRPI (unchanged) 6. Blue Ribbon Yearbook (unchanged) 7. Verbal Commits (changed) 8. Watch Stadium (changed) 9. Fox Sports website (changed) 10. College Sports Madness (new for 2020)
I won’t editorialize, but just make the empirical-based observation that there is significant and sustained inconsistency in how the national sports media reference the University and there has been very slow movement to the brand rolled out four years ago (in fact it looks like regression).

Don't worry, I'll handle the editorializing.
The brand rollout of four years ago failed just as the branding approach of thirty years ago failed. It's not only failed nationally, in the examples above, but locally, as shown by the many references to U-D by the Detroit public and media. Seems obvious that the "study" from four years ago was not a good faith effort to find the right brand for the University. It seems like it was an expensive show put on in response to complaints from alumni. "Hey, we're doing something."
Overall, the Mercy brand lessens the perceived stature of the University. Athletically, it makes it harder to recruit and schedule and places an unnecessary burden on the coaches.
Most organizations would love to have a brand that survived a thirty year effort to kill it. We won't do the simple thing and just embrace it.

From the outside looking in (I'm not a Detroit alumni), I really can't understand why the school has and is playing such hardball with the brand, and/or the name. I understand the affiliation of the two schools was key for the University of Detroit to continue, but it may have been just as important for Mercy future financially, I wonder if mercy could have been self supporting without the U of D, I don't know. I can't see students running head long to come to a Mercy College in the middle of Detroit, I may be wrong. The Sisters of Mercy may have had the funding, but the school certainly could have depleted that funding as time went on. The U of D had the tradition and "good will" that schools can't buy, they have to earn it. They clearly could have handled the naming better, it could have been the Mercy College of something within the frame work of the University of Detroit. Back when when City College of New York was a respected and important school they had many colleges within the University. I went to the Bernard Baruch School of Business of CCNY, It would be so much better for the school, the city and the community if it still was the University of Detroit.

Believe me fan, you're not alone, whether among other non-alums (like myself) or alums. It just seems like an inconceivably bull-headed, bad business decision.

Couple of branding notes from the weekend:
A guy on Twitter, commenting during the broadcast of the Detroit/Oakland game, posted, "Detroit Mercy's secondary logo, the olde English DM, looks like it was inspired by the Macomb Daily."
On the WDIV "ticker" that runs along the bottom of the screen during the broadcast, the logo they use to show Titan scores is the old Detroit Titans sword and shield logo, not the current one that includes Mercy.
As the Supremes would say, "Someday, we'll be together."

Last night, during a cool exchange on the Pistons broadcast, Greg Kelser and George Blaha discussed Turono Anderson with Greg saying that Anderson was a great high school player who was part of the talented "University of Detroit" team that included Long, Tyler, etc. George said, "A lot of talent has come through U-D."
Those two guys are involved in Detroit area basketball from high school on up. Blaha is pretty much synonymous with basketball in Detroit. If he still calls us U-D, everyone probably should.

Ugh. The "University of Mercy"? What a way to start my day. But I'm always glad to hear a reference to the Executioner, who is one of my all time favorite boxers.

Hopkins was great. The best in a long line of great middleweights (in my opinion) in the early 2000s. I was very much rooting for Hopkins in the unification tournament with himself, Holmes, Joppy and Trinidad. Then he quickly followed up with a victory over De La Hoya. Great run. Exciting to watch as he was the first undisputed middleweight since Hagler.
I've since quit watching boxing entirely... but still love the sport!

When I watch ACC Network they constantly air ads for Fanatics.com. They say they carry merchandise for “every conference and every team” but Detroit nor Detroit Mercy are listed on their website. I think they do pretty much have every school except us. Even some DII teams.
