I find that we are totally underrepresented in local and national retail outlets. I'm sure it is an untapped stream of revenue.
Of course, it's an easy fix if you want to increase the revenue from merchandise sales: Change the name of the school back to the University of Detroit. I would actually start buying officially licensed merchandise from the school again, instead of giving my money to Vintage Brand. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way. I imagine that it would be easier getting U of Detroit gear to stores like Rally House than it is getting a commitment from them to carry Detroit M___y items.

I just saw this item on my Facebook feed announcing that the Detroit Mercy Campus Kitchen has been renamed the fancy sounding “Titan Equity Nourish Network,” abbreviated TENN. There is a note that the new name came after “months of strategic planning and reflection.” As you can see, there is a banner headline superimposed over a photo of the Detroit Mercy campus that says “We are TENN!” Since “Tenn.” is one of the long-standing abbreviations for the state of Tennessee, my reflex impression was that the post had something to do with the “Volunteer State” a few hundred miles to our south. I’m not sure if some of the folks at McNichols & Livernois really appreciate the importance of getting this branding thing right.

Before I could read your post, there was the picture, and I was thinking "Tennessee." And that's before we get to the "Titan Equity Nourish Network," which is surely the least watched channel on cable TV. WTF is the "Equity Nourish Network?"

Here’s a link with information about the program. It seems like a very worthwhile activity, I just don’t think much of the branding approach, especially the “we are Tenn” part used on Facebook. www.udmercy.edu/about/mission-vision/lead-serve/tenn.php

Enjoy - or ignore completely if you're tired of it I'm giving this article a standing ovation. The first few paragraphs read like something I would have written myself.

"A recognized national brand became a discombobulated punchline."
That's probably the best description I have ever read of the situation.

"A recognized national brand became a discombobulated punchline." That's probably the best description I have ever read of the situation. I mean give it time, it's only been 31 years since the merger and 4 years since the million dollar consultant brand study. And he's not wrong with ANY of his points, yet here we are, sigh...

I think Don's article and commentary are significant, because he's looking at the situation from the outside. He has no dog in the fight, so this is the objective viewpoint of a guy with a real appreciation of college basketball and hoop history. Don't know if you saw it, but on Twitter he said the Titan team that lost to Michigan in the NCAA tourney had a good chance of winning the national championship had they gotten past the Wolverines. Maybe in another 31 years we'll right the wrong and change our name back.
