Memphis basketball and Penny Hardaway are struggling right now, but I do admire the way that they recognize their history and tradition with their "Memphis State Games". They recognize that there is still a lot of affinity for that name and logo.
Probably to much to ask that we have "University of Detroit" games.

We should have at least one home game where we wear throwback uniforms and honor the University of Detroit tradition and heritage in our athletic department. After all, we just spent homecoming recognizing 80 years of the Mercy tradition in the school.

People would get too excited about it. 😁

Good news! On my Menu Guide for tonite ESPN is listing our game tonite as Wisconsin (Milwaukee) vs Detroit at Calihan Hall so at least their production crew will be looking for Calihan Hall and not a Medical Center in Detroit.

Responding to Rogobob's quote here because I didn't want to take the Milwaukee thread off topic.
Rogobob: "Today we are playing the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee that uses “Milwaukee” as its athletic brand. Thursday we played the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay the goes by “Green Bay” for its sports teams. We didn’t need to muck things up five years ago."
As I have said before and will continue to say, the powers that be never intended for that "branding study" to be a serious attempt at finding the right brand for the University. From all indications, the intent was to make the Mercy part the more prominent than it was before, regardless of what made marketing and business sense. I'm sure they are fine with the broadcasters during our games referring to us as simply Mercy. We paid a consulting firm a million bucks to tell us what we already wanted to hear.

Yet some still consider Garibaldi’s efforts on the plus side because ? The name change and athletic name change 5 years ago is a conspiracy. This has been the plans all along to change the name to U Detroit Mercy. They the brASS have shoved it down our throats from the very beginning, from my experience. If any one didn't realize that already, then shame on all of us. Furthermore, since I never had a say in the name change, I'll unfortunately always have trust issues with the University. I am sure they could care less what I think. Moreover, it's also been a oneway street in regards to this naming of the University. I am hoping that their intentions are to change it back at some point in the nearly short future. Maybe the New President has the decision by the board to make an announcement in 2022, 30 years later😊

Okay maybe I exaggerated, mid major private institution. I'm not trying to offend all of you who havent seen the politics of the merger and UDM name change.😀

On the scoreboards at the O’Rena yesterday, it was “Detroit” and “Oakland.” In the post-game press conference, Kampe referred to his opponent as “Detroit.” Even the OU student section seemed to go along as they has waved a large “No Mercy” banner. So I guess we can’t blame the Detroit News for being confused when Tony Paul gets the day off. It’s only been 32 years since the consolidation, the preferred name recommended by the outside consultants is sure to catch on soon.

What still annoys me the most is that we paid money to hurt ourselves and alienate fans and alumni and the Administration is to arrogant to recognize the truth. I will always wonder if I contributed to the stupidity.

I noticed today that on the CBS Sports website our team page is titled Detroit Titans but their game recaps randomly refer to us as Detroit and Detroit M___cy. The beat goes on.

I thought the font sizes used on these shirts was interesting given how the school wants to brand “Detroit Mercy.” I believe the University was handing these out to newly accepted students earlier this week.

Maybe they will just keep reducing the font size for Mercy until it just disappears?

I thought the font sizes used on these shirts was interesting given how the school wants to brand “Detroit Mercy.” I believe the University was handing these out to newly accepted students. View AttachmentA lot of the clothing items sold in the campus bookstore kind of do the reverse. Where the “Detroit” and “Mercy” are presented on top of each other, the font size on the 5-letter “Mercy” is made bigger so it matches up in length with the 7-letter “Detroit.” This creates an emphasis on the second word in the school’s brand. All this may seem trivial to some, but consistency in font size utilized is of importance given the rather awkward full “University of Detroit Mercy” name of the institution that has failed to catch on after 30+ years in circulation.
