At halftime of the FAU game the special guest was former Detroit sportscasting heavyweight Bob Page. He lives in Florida now, six months out of the year. He was interviewed by the Titans radio announcer. Bob mentioned that he used to call play by play for U of D back in the 1980s. Then, unprompted, he said, "I really hate that the University goes by 'Detroit Mercy' these days. I just hate it". The Titan radio guy quickly moved on to the next topic. I would say that Bob Page, with all of his years in the industry and his knowledge of the Detroit market, knows what he is talking about.
Seems like it's pretty much unanimous except for the decision makers at the University.

When I placed my winning bet at Caesars Sportsbook last week, it was for DETROIT. No mention of Mercy. It’s a minor inconvenience for me, not a 32 yr obsession. Let’s Go Titans…Beat Charlotte.

And he is correect about the fall of the program.

FWIW, at tonight’s President’s “Celebrate the Christmas Season” event for University alumni and friends, Dr. Taylor referred to the school as “the University of Detroit” (not once but twice) and also “UDM.” At the end of the program, the Jesuit giving the benediction called the school “UD Mercy” multiple times. There are definitely issues with the current brand/brand consistency/brand implementation approach that seem intractable.

So on WWJ 950 AM radio yesterday, they ran a story almost every hour on AD’s new league scoring record. I’m it, the reported called us U of D at the beginning and the Mercy at the end! Confusing and extreme!

Who cares as long as the team plays well and we recognize that our school has multiple names. It’s not a big deal.

Who cares as long as the team plays well and we recognize that our school has multiple names. It’s not a big deal. We have a brand that has about ten “wrong” (as defined by the institution) variants in common everyday usage. Our branding is so far off the rails that the University is frequently perceived as being a name of a hospital, and the school’s President often struggles to get it right. It’s a mess that won’t ever get better without an honest assessment of why the brand has intrinsic problematic issues. Specific to athletics, there are reports from coaches that it has hurt recruiting and scheduling. Here’s but one article from a Google search on the “importance of brand consistency.” www.textmetrics.com/the-importance-of-brand-consistency

There are definitely issues with the current brand/brand consistency/brand implementation approach that seem intractable. The President of the University called us the University of Detroit? Twice? Guess we can't blame that on lazy broadcasters or inattentive reporters. And it's interesting that he used University of Detroit; it's not like he grew up here and just automatically defaults to U-D the way old geezers like I do. Somebody get that man a copy of the University's 32 page Brand Standards Guide!

The following was copied from the University’s website. The University seems to care, sorta: Do not use acronyms such as DM, UDM, U of D or the like when referencing Detroit Mercy on public websites, marketing materials including fliers, brochures, pamphlets, booklets and other promotional materials. Please remember that following the first reference to “University of Detroit Mercy,” use “Detroit Mercy” for subsequent references. This standard applies to all promotion, web content and other material used to promote the institution. . . . Since the brand launch in 2016, the University’s Marketing & Communications (MarCom) Department has consistently used brand artwork and brand lines in a variety of promotions. Many departments, colleges and organizations are also supporting this effort as well, and we thank everyone for the support! MarCom understands that everyone wants to positively promote the University and its many activities. However, it has also been observed that some improper uses of the brand have been applied to fliers, websites, social media sites and other resources. To increase brand and identity consistency, departments, Colleges, Schools and Detroit Mercy student organizations must closely examine and adhere strictly to the guidelines posted on the MarCom website. You may also refer to the Detroit Mercy Brand Standards Guide. As MarCom becomes more aware of improper uses of these assets, departments and Colleges and Schools will receive instructions to immediately remove inconsistent materials and/or remove them from campus bulletin boards. MarCom will also reach out to departments, colleges and organizations with offers to help revise materials to adhere properly to the identity standards.

I would think that everyone would recognize that it is important to have an easily recognizable, clear, effective brand name, no matter the organization. But I recognize that not everyone agrees with me on that, and I understand if those posters ignore this thread and related posts. Or make their disagreement known, whatever they prefer. But as you suggest, clearly the University thinks it's a big deal. They just can't get everyone (including their own officials) to stick to the branding rules.

The score ticker at bottom of screen for our csu game has us listed as Det Mercy. It’s not the first or last that has happened. The stray person finding this game would have zero idea who we are or our long heritage (or that we are in Detroit).

ESPN’s NCAA stats page lists the various leaders followed by a school abbreviation. Antoine is currently 5th in scoring. The schools for the top 5 scorers are: UAB, COPP, PENN, PUR and … DETM (haven’t seen that one before)
