The score ticker at bottom of screen for our csu game has us listed as Det Mercy. It’s not the first or last that has happened. The stray person finding this game would have zero idea who we are or our long heritage (or that we are in Detroit). In one instance, I saw our name abbreviated as DEM. I remember Rogo stating that it referred to "Remember dem Titans". That still cracks me up.

The ticker on CBS Sports Network is informing the nation that "Detroit" beat IUPUI today.

Over the past two days, prominent voices such as John Rothstein and the G League referred to us as "Detroit". Don't worry; I am sure they will get everyone on the same page sooner or later.

Yes, it's only been 33 years since the consolidation, just a third of a century. Let's give it at least a century to sink in.

Another example of the "effectiveness" of our branding strategy:
Rotowire.com has a profile up for Jay Allen Tovar, who they now list as playing for "Detroit". Their latest update on Jay is this item:
Commits to Detroit May 17, 2023
Allen-Tovar committed to Detroit on Tuesday, per Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.
ANALYSIS Allen-Tovar withdrew his previous commitment to Southern Utah and will enroll in Detroit. Ideally for him, he will receive more opportunities as a Mercy player. Allen-Tovar logged three games his latest season.
That's just great. Which local kid doesn't grow up in Metro Detroit wanting to be known as a "Mercy player". 🙄

The program got some positive media attention with WXYZ Television doing a story on the golf event. The branding hasn't quite taken hold yet. On the website text of the story, we're called U of D Mercy in the headline and University of Detroit Mercy in the first mention in the story. After that, we're called U of D twice in the remaining paragraphs. I think two out of those three of violate our branding guidelines. The link also refers to U of D. Keep pushing that boulder uphill, university leaders. www.wxyz.com/news/titans-golf-outing-raises-scholarship-money-for-u-of-d-students

From Facebook:
"Have you seen the new University of Detroit Mercy billboard featuring our very own Class of 2023 valedictorian Kara Wolfbauer? Tell us in the comments where you spot them. Wolfbauer majored in Communication Studies and Psychology."
The billboards say "The only university with Detroit in the name!"
Not sure this really fixes what's not working with the University's branding approach and name issues that have been clearly evident over the past third of a century.

It's another half measure that will fail to do anything to fix the branding confusion and identity issues that we brought upon ourselves back in 1990. It doesn't move the needle at all. It's another waste of time and resources, in my opinion.

IMO, it telegraphs that the University knows that there is an elephant in the room, but broadcasts to the public (via billboards!) that it is afraid to mention or do anything thing about the large critter. The status quo approach essentially continues.

If Mercy Health could change its name to Trinity Health, then what's so sacred about Mercy in the name of our university?

I can again confirm something that UofDfan1983 spoke of a year or so ago: The University still accepts and cashes donations of physical checks that are made out to "The University of Detroit". Apparently the branding guidelines are flexible in that regard.

I'm was at the Titans women's soccer game on Sunday. Some fans were cheering "let's go Mercy." The people behind me, relatives of players, are confused. "Is U of D letting Mercy use their field?" "Isn't Mercy on Outer Drive?" Some confusion also between UD Jesuit and UDM. A lady who went to Mercy for a year didn't know that MCD no longer exists so I helped her out by explaining the consolidation that occurred 33 years ago.
Titans won 4-0, total domination of Purdue Fort Wayne.
