I'm was at the Titans women's soccer game on Sunday. Some fans were cheering "let's go Mercy." The people behind me, relatives of players, are confused. "Is U of D letting Mercy use their field?" "Isn't Mercy on Outer Drive?" Some confusion also between UD Jesuit and UDM. A lady who went to Mercy for a year didn't know that MCD no longer exists so I helped her out by explaining the consolidation that occurred 33 years ago. Titans won 4-0, total domination of Purdue Fort Wayne. The "Mercy above all" folks are getting their way.

After years of reflection, I think the best option in 1990 would have been to incorporate the consolidation officially as "the Jesuit-Mercy University of Detroit" with general branding to the larger public on a daily basis being "University of Detroit." Commit to a marketing strategy that would clearly emphasize that the "University of Detroit" is a comprehensive Catholic university that benefits from its affiliation to two distinct but highly regarded major religious orders. Punctuate marketing, branding, symbols, etc., with reference to both orders in a way that would make the Sisters of Mercy comfortable that "University of Detroit" encompasses not obliterates their past contributions and future role in higher education in the city of Detroit.

Mercy is in the official name, on the uniforms, on the official website, on all the signage, etc. Jesuit is...where? I remember seeing banners on the campus grounds on the light poles that said "Jesuit", but I don't know if they are still there. Rogo's idea would have made a lot more sense than what has happened since then. Seriously, it's hard to imagine the name change and branding being handled more poorly than it has been.

Should have been Mercy College of/at the University of Detroit, kind of like St Mary's was at ND.

Which is all the more ironic since the motto of Mercy College on the current university seal translates from Latin to English as "Mary, Seat of Wisdom."

I saw the Twitter post from Michael Oaks where he announced his commitment to the University of Detroit Mercy. In a reply to his post, someone posted, "Congratulations and much success in choosing University of Detroit."
That is one lasting brand. Too bad we've spent thirty plus years trying to kill it.
On another note, where do you think high school players would prefer to play? A school called The University of Detroit? Or Detroit Mercy? Anyone who thinks that the "official" name of the school doesn't hurt recruiting and scheduling is sadly mistaken.

I had a doctor's appointment yesterday with an ophthalmologist who spent four years at Henry Ford Hospital. When I said I was from Detroit and had attended University of Detroit (which is true; it was UofD when I was there) he corrected me: "UD Mercy." (His wife got her degree from UDM.) It's a new generation.

Almost every time there's a new post in this thread, you just so happen to have just had an encounter with someone in a southern state who corrects you with "UD Mercy" when you say University of Detroit. It's incredible. Truly one of the most unbelievable things about this forum. Just amazing.

But I want you to be happy and not feel sad Don't worry, I'll be happy when we start winning. But not as happy as I was when we were winning as the University of Detroit.

Perry Watson successfully lobbied the University to brand as "Detroit" rather than "Detroit Mercy" for athletics a few years after the consolidation. His main argument was that the DM brand was detrimental to recruiting and scheduling. A very sound compromise IMO. Has anyone noticed how our recruiting has looked since the decision to revert back to "Detroit Mercy" for the Titan program?
I was watching the PFW Mastodons MBB game a couple days ago, they had "Fort Wayne" on the front of their jerseys, just the name of the city. I think that is cool, something a lot of schools with hyphenated names do (e.g., UMKC uses Kansas City, UWGB goes by Green Bay, UWM is Milwaukee, etc.). Let's stop the branding madness at least for athletics and return to being the Detroit Titans.
