Perry Watson successfully lobbied the University to brand as "Detroit" rather than "Detroit Mercy" for athletics a few years after the consolidation. His main argument was that the DM brand was detrimental to recruiting and scheduling. A very sound compromise IMO. Has anyone noticed how our recruiting has looked since the decision to revert back to "Detroit Mercy" for the Titan program? I was watching the PFW Mastodons MBB game a couple days ago, they had "Fort Wayne" on the front of their jerseys, just the name of the city. I think that is cool, something a lot of schools with hyphenated names do (e.g., UMKC uses Kansas City, UWGB goes by Green Bay, UWM is Milwaukee, etc.). Let's stop the branding madness at least for athletics and return to being the Detroit Titans. I suggest University of Detroit Mercy-Livernois, just so people don't get to thinking they need to go to the law school to see a game.

I had a doctor's appointment yesterday with an ophthalmologist who spent four years at Henry Ford Hospital. When I said I was from Detroit and had attended University of Detroit (which is true; it was UofD when I was there) he corrected me: "UD Mercy." (His wife got her degree from UDM.) It's a new generation. Wow, what a coincidence! Almost every time there's a new post in this thread, you just so happen to have just had an encounter with someone in a southern state who corrects you with "UD Mercy" when you say University of Detroit. It's incredible. Truly one of the most unbelievable things about this forum. Just amazing. It’s sad that you feel compelled to make a snarky comment every time someone posts an opinion counter to yours. (As far as your comment about a "southern state, this doctor lived in Royal Oak for four years.)

I also live down south. In my area, several dentists advertise that they graduated from the University of Detroit Dental School. My chiropractor hired a new DC several years ago who told me that before going to chiropractic school, he had graduated from "a small school you likely never heard of - Detroit Mercy" about 15 years ago. Our graduates appear to be smart. They move to where the jobs are located.

I'm just commenting on the incredible convergence of circumstances that continues to provide you with timely anecdotal counterpoints when someone makes a post about how branding is not working. It's just stunning to me, because in all the places I've lived and visited in the US, in all the situations that I told someone I graduated from the University of Detroit, I've never had anyone "correct" me with "You mean..." and using one of the many variations of the Mercy brand. Yet, it seems to happen to you quite often. Imagine the odds. You couldn't make that up. So the doctor lived in Royal Oak for four years? But the conversation you relayed took place in a southern state, right? I'm fine with people having opinions to mine. I'm quite happy to discuss them on this board. I try support my points with facts and things that actually happened.

Prediction: This rebranding is only one step in a two step process. They really just want to see if everyone can called University of Detroit Mercy to just "Mercy". They are trying to get everyone on board with dropping University first so in the future they can do the same thing to get everyone to drop Detroit from the name.
Just look at the logo. You just need to delete the D that you can barely notice in the background so you are left with the M.

Especially since my last previous post was October 27, 2022, and since then you have had at least nine separate postings about the name. You: That’s not snarky? And just because it hasn’t happened to you it’s not valid? You: And you’re accusing me of making things up? I give up on you, Sam.

If you took it as snark, that's on you. Like I've always said, I give back what I get on this board. As far as giving up on me, go right ahead. I'm sure we'll both survive.

I did a Google search for LMU men's basketball to get some information on their radio and television partners. An information page came up with various information and links to different sites regarding LMU. At the top of the page, there's a notice that LMU is scheduled to play the "Detroit Titans" tonight. On their official scheduling page, however, the opponent is listed as the Detroit Mercy Titans. In something more related to carelessness than branding confusion, if you go to the LMU page on their ticketing partner website AXS, you'll read that LMU's opponent is the Detriot Mercy Titans. www.axs.com/events/504824/lmu-men-s-basketball-vs-detriot-mercy-tickets?_ga=2.180352109.851437228.1702771017-238181537.1658904579On the Lions Den message board, their fans refer to us as Detroit Mercy and as Detroit. And there seems to be some concern among them that Alex might play tonight. Even if he doesn't (I don't expect to see him) it's nice to see that his presence is seen as a potential difference maker by opponents. Go Titans.

Once it is called just Mercy they will move it out of Detroit or if they stay they will move it out of it's location to a better location. They may have already started the process with there Dental program location.

Given the amount of vacant land near the dental building in that corner of Corktown it actually would be pretty cool if somehow the university took over and developed a giant swath of it. But, I would put all of that as odd less than 0.1% of happening.

Comments from the NC State message board in the Detroit Mercy thread.
"Sounds like we're playing a hospital tomorrow." "St. Elsewhere was already scheduled and MASH is out of eligibility." "I understand Detroit Mercy is expected to compete for the top spot in the hospital league. Should be a tough one." "0-12? Oh Mercy"
"Never thought it would come to fruition. We're playing the Detroit Sisters of Mercy & they are having a banner game."
A couple that I liked: "Detroit series takes me back to our NIT win over them in 1978. Tiny Pinder had like 21 rebounds for the Pack. He later played for the Harlem Globetrotters. Dick Vitale coached that Detroit team iirc." [Coach Gaines was actually the coach of that team, but given the way that the University has celebrated Vitale and ignored Gaines, that mistake is understandable.]
"Did John Long and Terry Tyler use up their covid eligibility?" [Someone knows their college basketball history.]

One glance at an opponent's message board tells all you need to know. The University's branding strategy appears to be designed to do one thing: placate a single group. Actually coming up with the best brand for the organization does not appear to be a consideration.

The win last night earned the Titans 30 seconds of fame on Sports Center. Scott Van Pelt used the game for his "Best Thing I Saw Today" feature, basically poking fun at the one person court storming at the buzzer.
During the short clip, Van Pelt referred to us as Detroit Mercy, Mercy (twice), and Detroit.

Proving that branding touches everything, when Jon Rothstein posted on Twitter that Davis had been fired, some smart aleck in the comments responded "NEW BLOOD AT THE HOSPITAL"
