You may not be a Titan grad, UP, but I wish more of our alumni had your passion and commitment to the University and the basketball program. Thanks for all you do. Thanks Sam. I wish we could get the Moose back in the fold. this could be a good year for the program. Who else are non-alums? me, UP, Moose. Do miss Moose. He hasn't logged on to either board in several months.

I’m more concerned that one of our alumni thinks the plural of university is university’s. No need for concern, I am not one of your Alumni. My spelling skills seem to be fading with my retention skills The first article Rogo pointed out is the same article that I read. I guess I was looking for U of D. Oh, now I understand the source of your confusion. Easy mistake to make. The official name of the school is “University of Detroit Mercy,” it’s been that way for 29 years. “U of D” is just what 90 percent of alumni, the general public, and even current students use when referring to the University.

Did Moose make it to games last season? No, I didn't see him there and I usually look for him. I hope he is in good health. Maybe Sam can get in contact with him and let him know we miss his posts and his comaraderie at the games.

Haven't talked to him since, but I sent a text to him today. We all miss him.

I spoke to Moose via text. He is doing well, just really busy. He will be back to posting and plans to attend more games this coming season.

The secret to a successful program at Gonzaga is a partnership with a near-by native American tribe with a gaming casino. Link to Press Release

I suspect the partnership is a result of the successful program at Gonzaga. The casino dates to 2000, the Zags have been a force since the late 1990s.

It’d be funny if it weren’t so sad. I wish Garibaldi and the trustees would have at least offered a public event where alumni and students could have voiced opinions. Instead of that online survey that I’m now convinced was completely ignored. I think the rebrand fail holds us back more than any other challenge we face. Hard to be great your own alumni/students don’t embrace the new name and everyone is just plain confused. I was invited to be part of a focus group for the rebrand initiative. There were maybe ten alumni in the group including me and Titan Mike, with the conversation guided by one of the consultants. The clear consensus of the group was that the University of Detroit Mercy name was confusing and participants advocated a change back to University of Detroit since that is what most people called it anyway. I’m convinced that this was a somewhat disingenuous process designed to get the University what they wanted from the very start. That said, I don’t know what transpired in the other focus groups for students, staff, prospective students and the general public. Obviously I don't know if the rebranding strategy had a predetermined outcome, but it certainly appears that way. The University put a bunch of money into that sign at the Six Mile entrance that shouts "Mercy" and I believe that was done while the branding "study" was going on. Would they have spent that money if there was a possibility the name would change back to University of Detroit? I doubt it; we don't have a lot of money to throw around. And I think it was reported on this board or the other that a University official was telling people late in the process that we were going back to University of Detroit. The interesting thing about what the G-Man told you is that he appears to be one of those guys who refuses to buy the gear with Mercy on it. I imagine there are a lot of people like that out there (yours truly, included). We're probably losing a lot of customers (revenue) because of that attitude. Conversely, I don't think the current students, faculty, employees, alumni, general public, etc., would STOP buying items if we went back to U of D. In fact, I bet you'd see a large increase in purchases. The University has a wide variety of well designed gear. Slap U of D on that stuff, properly market it, and I think sales soar.

For what it's worth, that HoriZone article refers to UDM six times. Five of them say Detroit Mercy, one says just Mercy.
Also, for what it's worth, the information in the article is about five years old. The enrollment numbers he quotes are 2012. The endowment figures are quite a few years old; Detroit Mercy's is now north of $70 million (he says less that $52 million) and by the end of the capital campaign probably will approach $100 million. (Plus, he wrongly defines an endowment.)

Ok, here’s my take on the article. He didn’t totally botch the endowment part. But he needed more up to date figures, and those are a little bit harder to find than whatever he finds on Wikipedia. It takes looking up the latest annual report. Also, he kind of says that Bellarmine is in a good financial because of a 50m endowment which really isn’t much if we are telling the truth. 100m endowment isn’t anything to brag about either. Also, he cites the $40,000 sticker price of Bellarmine, but we all know many students are not paying sticker there. Bellarmine is by no means a wealthy institution and for them going D1 is part investment part gamble. I think it will pay off, but it’s in no way guaranteed.
The main problem with his article is that he doesn’t really get into the fact that Bellarmine already has a conference. They are set to be in the ASUN next year after a unanimous vote from that conference. There’s a price to pay to leave a conference. Bellarmine isn’t flush with cash and would HL really be a better than ASUN for them? Probably not. The travel would only be marginally easier for them. In ASUN they get to play some decent programs like Liberty and FGCU.
I’d like Bellarmine in the HL myself, but I think it would have made more sense to get them as they entered D1.

The Davis twins, class of 2024,posted that they enjoyed their unofficial visit to "u of d".
They also posted a nice pic of them in Lady Titan uniforms. Branding disaster aside, it is good to be positively mentioned on social media.
