Johnsons stats (1.3 ppg) certainly suggest he would be someone this staff would sign.

We do have a scholarship available. An extra body on the front line would be helpful. If he transferred this month, would he be eligible for winter semester?

Jalen Thomas of UD Jesuit and Georgia State is in the portal. Thomas, who transferred to Butler, has suffered a pulmonary embolism and will miss the start of the season. Prayers up for this young man.

Good post RBJ.
I recently heard the UM womens coach talk and she echoed very similar sentiments. She said she wants to build a program rather than build a team each year with all kinds of new faces and turnover.
I also saw izzo speak this week…he talked about the importance of grads having a coach and university to lean back on for next career steps, etc. he has former players always reaching out and hw helps in some way shape or form. He said in contrast you got a guy who’s bounced around to a bunch of teams, who does he call when he needs a job lead or something similar?
Granted both examples above are from big time programs that can pick and choose how they use the portal compared with life as a mid major but alas still good points.

I am late responding to this, but I did want to say that I admire the way Michigan State has built their culture and family environment. One of my favorite things about the Spartans program is that period in the summer when former players come back and hang out with the coaching staff and current team. It's like a yearly reunion. And it is a product of the continuity that exits in the program. Izzo goes back to the Heathcote era and has maintained a relationship with the vast majority of players from the past almost 40 years. Obviously, it would be more difficult for the Titans to do something like that. We haven't had the continuity in the head coach position like MSU or North Carolina has had, so such a connection can't come from the coach. But there should be a person in the athletic department who maintains and builds relationships with former players and coordinates things like an alumni day during summer practice that allows current players to connect with past players. And it is something that should be publicized heavily.

A name in the portal that caught my eye is Lonnell Martin. He's a Flint native who did a couple of years in junior college before spending the last two years at the U of Montana. Averaged 6 points per game both years. Hit 37% from three and 87% from the free throw line this past year. Academic all conference. Maybe he's interested in spending his last year in college back in his home state. gogriz.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/lonnell-martin-jr-/6551

Myron Gardner of Little Rock is in the portal. Myron is a Detroit native who used to play at Detroit Loyola High School. He was part of the group of Detroit area players that Jermaine Jackson was able to convince to leave Detroit for Spire Academy in Ohio when he took over as coach. He was signed by Georgetown after Spire, but got into some trouble there and left the team. He spent a year at South Plains Junior College, and then enrolled at Little Rock. He had two very good seasons there, averaging 13 points and 9 rebounds this past season. He's 6-5, 220. I would hope he would be interested in returning to the 313 for his last year of college ball, but he's probably looking a little higher than the HL. lrtrojans.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/myron-gardner/7100

Great find Sam. This is EXACTLY the kind of transfer we should be getting, and used to get fairly often. I can't see a reason why he would not want to come here. No reason to try to go higher than the Horizon. Would seem like a perfect fit.

Why would we be looking for a one-year transfer? We have not been successful with that for the past five years. The time to go after Gardner would have been after his time at South Plains. But bring him in for a single season? I thought the general desire on this board was longer-term players.

Here's a familiar name in the portal, Tray Jackson. I've been following him for a while; he was originally in the class of 2018 and spent his freshman year of high school at my old school, Ypsilanti Lincoln High. He took a big jump the summer after his freshman year. I remember contacting the Titans coaching staff about him and they offered him shortly after. He transferred to Detroit Western and made all state honorable mention in 2017. He reclassified to 2019 after a year at Sunrise Christian Prep. Ranked #56 in the ESPN Top 100. Committed to Minnesota, the de-committed from the Gophers and committed to Missiouri. He spent a year at Missiouri and then transferred to Seton Hall. Only appeared in 3 games there his first year, but was a regular member of the rotation the past two seasons. Averaged 6 points and 2 rebounds. 6-10, 215, but plays more of a small forward than power forward or center. Good three point percentage. Good free throw shooter, but doesn't get to the free throw line much. Plusses and minuses, but probably a guy worth talking to. Didn't blow up at Missiouri and Seton Hall the way he thought, so maybe he is ready to make a bigger impact at home. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4593010/tray-jacksonshupirates.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/tray-jackson/5596
