Those three have solid resumes and have local roots. Unfortunately, Coach doesn’t seem to have any interest in recruiting local talent..be it HS, JUCO or D1/transfer.

Yet, beginning with the first roster on the team website, 2008-09, there appears to be no statistical relationship between the percentage of local players (defined as a Michigan resident coming from any State high school, any post grad academy, or any JUCO) on our roster and our W-L records or our average per game attendance. This does not mean that I am against having local players on the roster. Or against the three players named above. It just means that the data does not support the hypothesis that simply having more local players would improve our situation. We have to give all players reasons to want to come here in 2022 - not continue to act as if this was still 1975, 1998 or even 2010. And we have to give alumni and area college hoops fans reasons to want to attend our games.

And we have to give alumni and area college hoops fans reasons to want to attend our games. I don't think anyone is saying that simply having local players is the key to winning. It's always about good players. But several D1 impact players have come out of area high schools in recent years and we haven't gotten any of them. You gotta take advantage of some of your local talent. Especially a program like U-D which isn't offering a lot of reasons for recruits to pick us over other schools. "Playing in front of family and friends" is one of the few things we have to offer that separates us from other programs. If we can't take advantage of that, we're in trouble. We used to do a better job of that, but at the time we were also winning more games. Years back, when Percy Gibson was transferring from Iowa State, the consensus among some Detroit high school basketball coaches I was talking to was that he should have come to Detroit to join up with Chris Jenkins and CB. I imagine if we start winning again, it will be easier to get local players out of high school or from the transfer portal. Other things, such as facility improvements, are going to take a longer time. Of course, if we were winning, no one would care where the players were coming from. We're all frustrated.

Any new news? We already were aware of the recruits that were announced today.

Yes, there's more news, but as we all know, U-D doesn't exactly scurry to announce anything.

If I lived in the Detroit metro area I would drive down and see who is in the practices at Calihan but I am 8.5 to 9 hrs. away. I am curious to see if we were able to upgrade from our losses of Waterman, Johnson, Akec, Harvey and Isiani. Our strength coming back was on the perimeter where we now have added 3 more perimeter players. It looks like we have 6 possible contributors for 2 spots and 3 possible inside players for 3 spots. We will need to defend and rebound inside. So here’s hoping the next three if we have a next three are 6’9” to 6’11” or at least 6’8” and able to walk and chew gum at the same time. The new commits so far seem to have very good athleticism so we might have improved in that aspect but Harvey and Johnson were very athletic. Tankersley looks to be a really nice find.

Detroit Mercy’s Jordan Phillips has withdrawn from the transfer portal and will return.
Phillips averaged 7.4 points for UT Arlington in the 2020-21 season.

Glad he's back. No predictions. He could be a real contributor; he could be another total flop. But he has upside and maybe all this waiting (and injury) while the clock has been ticking will help make him hungry and ready for this moment. First and foremost, he needs to show me some teamwork and defensive effort.

I really liked what I saw when he was on the floor last season but it sure was a small sample. First he couldn’t play because we couldn’t get him eligible and then when he was able to get on the floor he had ankle problems. Pretty tough when you are in your exhibition season and everyone else has about 15-30 games under their belts.

He had solid stats playing in SunBelt conf with UT Arlington. He has similar size to Kool and Akej at SF. If he starts with Anderson and Parks, we go 6-9, 6-7, 6-7 up front. For final spots, we could use some bulky 6-8 to 6-10 types. Or a 6-11 string bean from Central Michigan (Polk), who reminds me of LaMarcus Lowe.

Tomorrow is Senior Day at Calihan Hall. Perhaps who is included as part of that event will provide a little bit of insight about who might not be coming back next season. I believe Davis, Oliver and Koka will be in that group of departing “seniors” for sure, but maybe there will be additional individuals.
