UP, I agree with you on many of your premises related to our Athletic Dept. You quite often go overboard with erroneous/questionable examples that are probably not appropriate, but I agree that we are nearsighted and step on our own feet all the time. When it comes to finding Garibaldi's replacement, however: rest assured the decision-makers are doing their due diligence. Garibaldi was a great choice and has been a wonderful leader. And I'm excited that after a sabbatical, he will be returning to U-D as a professor, and will be available to the new President as a sounding board/consultant.

[br You and I do disagree on Garibaldi being a great choice. I think He is responsible for us being stuck with Vowels and that has led to not many positive things happening in our Athletic Dept. He did his job which is what he was hired to do. It’s up for a lot of disagreement as to whether what he has done is exceptional. Have we taken a step forward, just treading water or fallen back. I think it’s really a difficult question to answer. Shouldn’t the new President decide whether he wants Garibaldi hanging around? Do we want more of the same or something better? One of the thoughts in business is that when your done your gone and hanging around is not an option. It’s a tough call but sometimes is the right call.

I believe that Garibaldi has been a net positive for the university as a whole, but not for Athletics.

I believe that Garibaldi has been a net positive for the university as a whole, but not for Athletics. Agreed. I believe there have been a lot of very positive developments during his watch, everything from fundraising to better collaboration with the City and with the surrounding neighborhoods. That has not been reflected in strictly athletic areas. It's no secret that I think the branding has been totally screwed up, but I don't see that as a decision he made unilaterally. Overall, I think he's done a good job. I hope that the next person builds on his successes.

I’m still trying to figure out how or when Indianapolis became a destination city.

Yes, very cool. Thought this was an interesting generic remark in the column showing our 1-0 record in non D-1 games in the wake of last night’s win over UM-Dearborn: “We know you like watching your team win by 50 points. It's fun but NET doesn't care about these games.”

Pretty nifty site, thanks for passing along.
On the ugliness front... - Only 2 HL teams higher 228, OU all the way up to 102 (good for them), and CSU at 163 - Average HL ranking is 260, oof - 5 teams 291 or worse, ugh - 27th ranked conference out of 32, awful - The biggest indignity, we are listed as "Detroit Mercy Titans" (always hate it when places comply with the official word)

Here are the final Horizon NET ranks, out of 358 D-1 teams:
173. Oakland 179. Cleveland State 186. Wright State 198. Northern Kentucky 235. Purdue-Fort Wayne 237. Detroit 246. Youngstown State 283. UIC 328. Robert Morris 333. Milwaukee 344. Green Bay 358. IUPUI
Pretty awful--fully a third of the conference in the bottom 10%, including the absolute worst, and only 2 teams in the top half--and both of them just barely. A far cry from a decade ago. That placed the conference 27th in overall NET (out of 32), ahead of only the Patriot, Northeast, MEAC, Southland, and SWAC. The Summit was ranked 23rd, the MAC 20th (by far their poorest showing in quite a while). The Ohio Valley, which is falling apart, was 21st, although with Murray State and Belmont leaving, expect a big drop next year. The WAC, which almost collapsed just a couple years ago, was 15th. The Big 12 was #1, the Big 10 #2.
The Horizon also ranked 27th under the old RPI formula, ahead of the same 5 conferences. The Summit was #21, the MAC #18, the OVC #23. The Big 12 was first, with the Big East 2nd, then the SEC and Big 10.
Despite finishing with the same overall conference rank, individual HL teams tended to fair quite a bit better, at least at the top of the conference. Horizon RPI ranks: 136. Oakland 152. Wright State 165. Cleveland State 179. Purdue-Fort Wayne 185. Northern Kentucky 197. Detroit 268. UIC 274. Youngstown State 319. Robert Morris 339. Milwaukee 351. Green Bay 358. IUPUI

The OVC is going to take a pretty big hit and will probably be considered a low major conference from here out losing Murray State and Belmont.

Would this help or hurt the HL?
