I can't really see why any team would opt out of playing post season, regardless of tournament. Sure, there will be some unusual circumstances; Oakland's player availability and injury concerns might be legit. A coaching change might mean the team stays home instead of continuing the season. A blue blood that misses the Big Dance might pass on playing in the minor tournaments. I think IU went through a stretch where they didn't play in the NIT; not sure if that's still the case. But for the vast majority, playing more games does more good than harm. For our program, I think it's an easy decision to play, just like it should have been last year.
Not sure why teams like Bellarmine, Utah Valley, Stony Brook, Grand Canyon, etc., wouldn't want to play. If I was a fan of those programs, I would be disappointed.
I'm excited about the opportunity and I will be tuning in tomorrow.

See, this is one I don't get. Bradley was 17-13 this season. They were 12-16 last season. The past 30 years they've made the NCAA tournament 3 times, most recently in 2006 and 2019. They played in the CIT in 2013. They last made the NIT in 2007. They're "too good" for the other tournaments? We'll see if that stance continues. I bet some of their players would like to play.

Is this the entire field? 32 teams now only 21? Or are other first round games still being worked out? What team forfeited? Did you notice we’re “Detroit”? Hope that’s what they engrave on the trophy if we win the whole thing. Probably intentional. I imagine that if you wanted audiences to be interested in a match up, you'd think that University of Detroit sounds like a better team than "Detroit Mercy". I think some of our non-conference opponents do the same thing when releasing their schedules.

Smart match making by the NIT. Dayton vs Toledo, Xavier vs Cleveland State. Should get some good crowds for those.

Belmont plays at Vanderbilt tonight in the NIT. Vandy kind of avoids scheduling Belmont. Hope the Bruins stick it to DJ's old team. It's a sellout.

There will be 11 teams moving into the second round. Any idea on how that is going to work? Go Titans….loving my ESPN+ subscription. I have seen more games this season that at ant time since 1969. I’m guessing they are sort of making this up as they go along. Obviously with the number of teams involved in the “bracket,” at various points along the way some teams will get byes. “The event features 21 teams and will be bracketed after the first round of play.” From DetroitTitans.com press release on the FGC game. Also saw this on the Basketball Classic website about the dates of the “final four”: “The tournament will begin on Monday, March 14 with the semifinals scheduled for Tuesday, March 29th and the Championship Game on Thursday, March 31st.” That means two rounds of play (with some byes that inserted) need to take place during the week of March 21.

MC Sam, maybe smaller schools opt-out because a one-and-done may be a net loss of $, and perhaps blue bloods look back at the Robert Morris/KY game a few years ago and don't want that forever loss.

Watching Wright State vs. Bryant out of the corner of my eye on the telly. Looks like a well-played and entertaining game. WSU up by 5 early in the second half, with Tanner Holden lighting things up.

WSU wins, it's another unit for the league, which will help everyone's pocketbook over the next six years.

It's almost in our/the HL interest to continue to be pretty terrible so that we can get a shot to win the 16/16/play in game to get that extra share! Perhaps the HL folks in Indy were playing this out strategically all along!

Georgia State trails Gonzaga by just 2 at halftime. Corey Allen leads all scorers with 10 points. He's onlh 3-11 from the field, but 2-4 from three and 2-2 from the line, with 0 turnovers. Can't be too optimistic for State, however--their best big man, Eliel Nsoseme, left the game with a knee injury; their number 2 big man, 6-10, 230 pound UD Jesuit grad Jalen Thomas, has three fouls, and Nsoseme's back-up, Kaleb Scott, has 4 fouls.
BTW, we check in from time to time on Corey Allen, but one wonders if we wouldn't have Thomas, too, had Ray remained as coach (Ray recruited him to GaSt). Thomas averaged 8 points and 6 rebounds this year, 10 and 7 last year. He's a junior, but thanks to Covid has 2 more years of eligibility.

Watching Allen play. Damn, it’s weird that he’s still playing college basketball.
