Good times for Baylor, as they are considered the #2 team in the nation and just landed a top recruit. Dillion Hunter, an Atlanta native who transferred to Ypsi Prep in Ypslanti, verbally committed to the Bears. ESPN ranks Hunter the #25 recruit in the class of 2022. www.espn.com/college-sports/basketball/recruiting/player/_/id/238291/dillon-hunterEdit: Well, not everything is good times for Baylor. They have already been impacted by the pandemic, and now this from Jon Rothstein on Twitter: "Baylor's next two games have been postponed due to Big 12 Conference men's basketball interruption guidelines, per release. Bears were slated to host TCU and travel to Oklahoma next Wednesday."

With their win tonight over West Virginia, Baylor wins their first conference championship in men's basketball since 1950. Congrats to Scott Drew, who has done a remarkable job in Waco since taking over a dead program back in 2003.

Scott Drew was rightfully named Coach of the Year in the Big 12, but if Baylor had not had such an great year, a strong case could have been made for Oklahoma State's Mike Boynton. The Cowboys are 19-7 after beating West Virginia in the Big 12 tourney today.

The Texas/Kansas game today has been cancelled due to Covid issues with the Jayhawks. Texas advances to tomorrow's conference title game.

Multiple reports indicate that Chris Beard is leaving Texas Tech for Texas. Stings for the Red Raiders, but not unexpected.
Lots of changes in the Big 12 this off season.

As expected, Cade Cunningham committed to Oklahoma State today. Cade Cunningham announced for the NBA draft. As far as the return on the investment of what it took to get him, I'd say it was worth it. Cunningham led OSU to a surprisingly good season, where they made it to the NCAA tournament and the Big 12 conference tournament finals. He won the Wayman Tisdale award for top freshmen in the nation and led the Big 12 in scoring at 20.1 per game. Got the program a lot of buzz, and raised the profile. Not bad for a one year tenure.

Not quite sure about this one. As someone else pointed out, Moser has made the NCAA tournament twice in 17 seasons as a head coach. I think he will do pretty well at OU, but he is benefiting from recency bias.

Not quite sure about this one. As someone else pointed out, Moser has made the NCAA tournament twice in 17 seasons as a head coach. I think he will do pretty well at OU, but he is benefiting from recency bias. True, but he's made a final 4 and a sweet 16 in the last 3 NCAA tournaments, and won another MVC title in there as well. Coaches can learn and get better, or some coaches just are good at long-term building projects (think about a guy like Mark Schmidt, who patiently rebuilt Robert Morris and now St. Bonaventure. But it took several years at each). Loyola's the first place where Moser spent more than 4 years. Moser had three 18 win seasons at UALR, which got him hired at Illinois State, where he inherited an 8-21 team. The Redbirds got better, but they gave him just 4 seasons. He went 15-16 his last year there with a team dominated by underclassmen, and they fired him. The next year the team--largely the same group of players--won 25 games. That said, I do think there's a sense that Moser is younger and more of a rising young star than he is. People sort of forget about his time at UALR and Illinois State, and I get the feeling most people peg his age at about 40, when in fact he'll be 53 next opening day, and, as you point out, there's a counter-narrative to the one I wrote just above. You'd think a school planning to shell out for a long term contract in the high 6 figures would know better, but I'm not sure. AD's can be stupid.

Multiple reports indicate that Chris Beard is leaving Texas Tech for Texas. Stings for the Red Raiders, but not unexpected. Lots of changes in the Big 12 this off season. The Texas Tech/Chris Beard break up has been UGLY. Red Raider fans have begun referring to Beard as Orange Judas, "orange" for the Texas colors and "Judas" because he "betrayed" Tech. The TTU athletic director kept the flames going with some negative comments about Beard after he left, much like the negative comments he made about Tubby Smith when Smith left Tech. Beard, like Smith a few years ago, has chosen to take the high road and not get into a war of words with the AD. Tech named Beard assistant coach Mark Adams the new head coach, but as I mentioned in another thread, TTU has still had nine players enter the transfer portal. UT on the other hand, is retaining players and adding transfers.

So A) they’ve hardly got clean hands; b) they know Beard’s a guy who wants to move up fast; and c) did they really think they were going to keep him when Texas or Kansas or Arizona or some such blue blood came calling? P.S. Beard is a UT graduate. Talk about Judas and lack of loyalty The nerve! Going back to coach at your alma mater!

Final Big 12 2020-21 Standings:
Baylor 13-1, 28-2 Kansas 12-6, 21-9 Texas 11-6, 19-8 West Virginia 11-6, 19-10 Oklahoma State 11-7, 21-9 Texas Tech 9-8, 18-11 Oklahoma 9-8, 16-11 TCU 5-11, 12-14 Kansas State 4-14, 9-20 Iowa State 0-18, 2-22
Overall, it was a great year for the Big 12. Baylor won the national championship, blowing out favored Gonzaga in the title game. The conference put seven teams in the Big Dance. Texas won the conference tournament but was upset in the first round of the NCAA tourney, leading to Shaka Smart leaving Austin to take the Marquette job. That left an opening at Texas, and Chris Beard left Texas Tech to take it. Assistant Mark Adams got promoted to the big chair at Tech. Lon Kruger retired from Oklahoma after a great career, and the Sooners hired Porter Moser. Steve Prohm was fired from Iowa State. He had a very solid career there, but this past season was historically bad. The Cyclones hired TJ Otzelberger away from UNLV, despite his less than .500 winning percentage in two seasons with the Rebels. With all that movement, 2021-22 should be an interesting season in the Big 12.

Texas Tech has added seven players to the roster via transfer this off season. Had some guys leave after the coaching change. We'll see how good Mark Adams does mixing that talent.
