"Home" is a key word here, not every kid wants to be in a "blue blood" program like Duke or KY, or the G-League or NBA as a teenager, maybe UDM can snatch a kid or 2 that wants to play at home.

1. Baylor 2. Kansas 3. Texas 4. TCU 5. Oklahoma State (Tie) 5. Texas Tech (Tie) 7. Oklahoma 8. Iowa State 9. West Virginia 10. Kansas State
Interesting that they are expecting another down year for WVU. Then again, it is a very deep conference.

Mid Season Big 12 check: The Big 12 once again looks like the best conference in the nation. West Virginia is in last place, at 10-6, 0-4, but their non-conference losses are to raked Purdue and Xavier, to go along with wins over Florida and Pitt. Currently ranked conference members are #2 Kansas, #10 Texas, #11 Kansas State, #14 Iowa State, and #17 TCU. Unranked Baylor has a win over Gonzaga.
The Big 12 is a conference in transition, but even after OU and UT leave, the conference will still have a strong basketball profile.

It's interesting to see what has been going on with Texas Tech basketball over the past ten seasons. In the Spring of 2013, the program hired Tubby Smith to take over a team that went 3-15 in conference and was struggling to recover from the damage of the Pat Knight and Billy Gillespie eras. Smith built the program to an NCAA tournament team by year three, but then left for Memphis. Tech swooped in and poached Chris Beard from UNLV; he never coached the Rebels, but had accepted the position there about four weeks before he bailed for Lubbock.
Beard had a good run at Texas Tech. In his five years there, the Red Raiders made the NCAA tournament three times (might have been four if the tourney hadn't been cancelled in 2020) and averaged 22 wins per season. In consecutive years they made the Elite Eight and the championship game. Beard then shocked the Tech fans (although the rest of the country probably expected it) when he took the University of Texas job. Fans were not happy, and literally burned Beard in effigy. Of course, after a solid year one with Texas, winning 22 games and making the Big Dance, Beard was arrested and charged with domestic battery after assaulting his finance'. He was fired by Texas shortly after that.
Mark Adams, who had served as an assistant at Tech under three coaches, including Beard and Smith, was promoted to the big chair. In his first season, 2021-22, the Red Raiders went 23-8, making it to the Sweet Sixteen. The games against Beard and Texas were epic, as Tech won both meetings. Hopes were high coming into this season. But somehow, the bottom fell out. At this moment Texas Tech is 10-10 overall, but 0-8 in conference. Adding to that misery is a messy domestic situation, where Adams apparently left his wife of 30 years after having an affair with his dead brother's widow. Yeah, that sounds crazy. On the message boards, the fans are already calling for Adams to be fired.
Highest of highs and the lowest of lows for TTU the past decade. Going to be interesting to see which way the program goes after this year.

Baylor 5. Iowa State 6. TCU 7. Oklahoma State 8. West Virginia 9. Texas Tech 10. Oklahoma The Big 12 was once again considered the best college basketball conference in the land in the 2022-23 season. Ranking #1 in both NET nd RPI. At season's end, there were 5 Big 12 teams ranked in the top 25. Seven teams made the Big Dance, the top six in the standings plus West Virginia. Kansas State and Texas made the Elite Eight. Rodney Terry, who was named interim coach at Texas after Chris Beard was fired, was named head coach in April. Changes are ahead for the Big 12, as they raided four teams from other leagues but are losing Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC in 2024 or 2025 (TBD). Football will suffer, but I expect the Big 12 to remain an elite basketball conference.

Max Abmas, who has spent the past three years as one of the top scoring players in college basketball, announced his transfer to Texas. Max spent four years at Oral Roberts, enjoying a lot of team and individual success, and decided to spend his extra Covid year in the Big 12 at Texas. He should be good there.
