This afternoon I was sitting in a barbershop on Puritan Avenue, waiting for my turn and passing the time by reading a Sports Illustrated article about a current Titan basketball player. I felt like I had been transported back to the 1970s.
Go Titans. May the glory days return again.

I was at the gym the other day, had my University of Detroit Mercy tee shirt on. An older (older than me) gentleman said, "That's the University of Detroit, isn't it." I affirmed, and he said that he went to Notre Dame back in the early 1960s and remembered Detroit visiting South Bend with Dave DeBusschere, who he said was just an amazing ballplayer. He couldn't stop raving about how good Dave was.
I want to see those days again.

I would even settle for the days of the mid 1990's to early 2000's. 2010-2013 will do to start. The team from 2012-13 seems like the dream team compared to what we've seen lately - Ray, Minnerath, Juwan, Calliste, High flyin' Doug Anderson, Freshman Anton Wilson, Bruinsma...

2010-2013 will do to start. The team from 2012-13 seems like the dream team compared to what we've seen lately - Ray, Minnerath, Juwan, Calliste, High flyin' Doug Anderson, Freshman Anton Wilson, Bruinsma... The big knock on Ray was that he didn't win with all the talent he had. (Remember the 2012 NCAA team also had Eli Holman, Jimmy Blake, and LaMarcus Lowe). People forgot that you get the whole coach--you can't have Ray to recruit and someone else to coach the games, or vice versa. And a lot of people seemed to think recruiting to Detroit was easy. I remember one quote in particular from a regular poster, close to the program, on the other board, when Ray was fired: "Watch the recruits pour in." Yeah, right. People actually convinced themselves that Ray was a reason we weren't getting a stream of McDonald's All-Americans or something. But this is a tough job. The quick turnaround that Ray engineered from the final couple years under Perry Watson made it all look so easy, I guess. The unfortunate disaster of the Bacari years seems to have sobered some people up, although we'll see if folks start carping about Coach Davis if the Titans win "just" 17 or 18 games this year, let alone 12-13. Meanwhile, we've got a good coach (I'm tempted to say the league's best coach, but we'll skip that argument for now), we've got a great point guard, and that's a pretty good pair to start rebuilding around. I hope we'll be back on the plus side of the ledger this year--even an NCAA bid with an HL tournament win. But people forget it took even Perry Watson 5 years to get us to a 20 win season, and he inherited a 15-12 team from Byrdsong that returned Tony Tolbert, Greg Grant, and Michael Jackson.

These guys like Antoine: bustingbrackets.com/2019/08/13/ncaa-basketball-top-5-unknown-players-going-2019-2020-season/4/They rank him 3rd among the "Top 5 Unknown Players Going Into the 2019-20 season." From the article: "Davis should lead the country in scoring this year and hopefully, the Titans make a future postseason run so more people get to see him." The others are Tres Tinkle of Oregon State, Yoeli Childs of BYU, Tristan Clark of Baylor, and Isaiah Miller of UNC-Greensboro.

What is with this guy and “known as”? A player “known as Antoine Davis”; he plays at a school “known as Detroit Mercy”; his father “known as Mike Davis”; his youth coach “known as John Lucas.” Recruited by schools “known as Oakland and Houston.”
They are their names!! He's not known as Antoine Davis, he IS Antoine Davis!

And note that the University of Detroit is known by some as "Detroit Mercy," although that is not, as we all know, its real name.
