What is with this guy and “known as”? A player “known as Antoine Davis”; he plays at a school “known as Detroit Mercy”; his father “known as Mike Davis”; his youth coach “known as John Lucas.” Recruited by schools “known as Oakland and Houston.” They are their names!! He's not known as Antoine Davis, he IS Antoine Davis! Good point nctitan. I wonder if the narrator had watched Blazing Saddles shortly before writing that script. I thought of the scene when the Waco Kid met Sheriff Bart. After waking up from another drunken stupor, the Waco Kid says, "My name is Jim ... people just call me Jim." Probably not. Too old school a movie for the narrator. "Known as" irritated me as much as when announcers say, "That basket puts the home team within 3" when it made the score 65-62. If the home team was within 3, then the score would at least be 65-63.

And note that the University of Detroit is known by some as "Detroit Mercy," although that is not, as we all know, its real name. I knew that comment would come from somebody.

I have a feeling that Antoine will become much more efficient this season because he will be surrounded by other effective 3-point shooters and some slashers. Did you notice how Isiani appeared in much better physical condition in the photo about which everyone was trying to guess the players? Moore began popping some 3's late last season. Maxwell is a very effective offensive threat. I have a feeling that our coach will have some surprises on offense. Our rebounding remains unknown until we see the roster - which I am told will be "very soon."

Coach Davis and staff have had all off season to consider the Antoine centered offense and how to counteract some of the 'Antoine Rules' that were put onto him by opposing teams especially as the HL season wore on. I suspect Coach didn't even think Antoine would have quite such a good freshman campaign, nor did he have really much of an idea of what his scrambled together roster would do on the court. As you note, the talent level is probably higher this season compared to last which benefits Antoine and spreading the ball around, and the defenses focus.

One thing worth remembering when looking at Antoine's assist rate is that Detroit was a very poor shooting team last year. Isiani, a good shooter, missed most of the season. Calipari is said to be an excellent shooter, as is Maxwell. Better shooting alone will improve Davis's assists numbers.

Interesting factoid. The Horizon League preseason voting included predicting the teams' rankings. Titans are eighth out of ten. Cleveland State is ten out of ten -- but with a first-place vote!!

Voting isn't the easiest process in the world, but it would be nice to get Antoine through at least to the round of 10. We can use all the PR we can get. You can vote once per day, and of course, you can vote from different email accounts if you've got more than one. This is not about the fate of the free world, and you know he's competing against schools with much larger fan and alumni bases. So let's stuff that ballot box for Antoine!
