From this point forward I will never watch a CBI game! I think they caved to SEC pressure!

I am beyond Pissed. This was the stupidest move this athletic department and administration has made in all of my years of being associated with the University. Here's the CBI Bracket, just released on their Twitter page. I’m not sure what the administration did. If CBI didn’t offer, they didn’t offer. It’s possible we dithered but I don’t think anyone here knows that, do they?

You could very well be right Commissioner. However, when CBI called, just say yes. And if they say we are considering then put a full court press on them through social media, print media etc. There are ways to dictate your destiny. They could have created an entire campaign behind getting their student-athletes into the CBI.

OR...initially CBI did the little foot flirt with us, they got alot heat for the perception of 'buying the record' plus looking at the rest of the field we would clearly be an outlier in terms of record and RPI. The objective eye at CBI would say - pass let's invite CSU or Milwaukee instead of Mercy College of Detroit.
Also, perhaps this is the ultimate bite back of our difficult scheduling philosophy. We were below 500 by several games so perception alone of a team with that kind of record getting a post season nod probably wasn't in our favor. We didn't win some win-able games along hte way this season so we shot ourselves in the foot that way as well.

We didn't win some win-able games along hte way this season so we shot ourselves in the foot that way as well. I was thinking this last point, too. Look, I totally get the philosophy that you want to beat good teams and that that can build you up for the conference tournament. On the other hand, in 5 seasons now we haven't sniffed a Horizon League tournament final. I think you also have to build a culture of winning, even if that means scheduling down. The CBI (and the CIT) have often been building blocks for teams attempting to rejuvenate their programs. More games, more practices, a feeling one can win an event, a tournament. I have zero objection to our playing these tournaments. USC-Upstate, with a NET rank more than 40 spots behind us (255 to 212), got invited. Do they get invited if they're 15-18 instead of 17-16? I doubt it. But they beat Brevard and Columbia-International, rather than losing to Washington State and Ohio. Of course, we did eat one cupcake this year (Rochester), so it would have been tough for us to get over .500 unless we swallowed three more (you can play up to 4 non-D1 teams). Maybe the EMU loss killed us as much as anything. But even at 16-17 we would have looked a lot more attractive. I think the team would have had a good time at Daytona Beach, which can't hurt recruiting, and I think the value of AD holding the record--probably for a long time--was worth something, for sure. Southern Indiana got a bid at 16-16 with a NET rank of 257. The rumor is it was part of their deal to play in the Gotham Classic--they'd also get a CBI bid if they finished .500 or better. Three of their wins were against non-D1 teams. Tarleton had a much better NET rank than us (162), but they were 13-16 without three wins over non-D1 teams. North Alabama had a 239 NET rank. They were above .500 against weak D1 competition (15-14) but they had to look better with three non-D1 wins pushing their record to 18-14. Western Carolina had a 229 NET rank but 3 non-D1 wins got them over .500 for the season. All of them are in the CBI. It's kind of sad that it's come to this--that we have huge threads debating, then largely hoping for, a CBI bid, and now I'm advocating scheduling more non-D1 opponents--but we are where we are. We need to put some Ws on the board and take what we can get in terms of post-season play as part of rebuilding the program.

A couple of thoughts on the situation. First, I think that Antoine Davis will become the asterisk to Pete Maravich's record. Going forward, any discussion of the record will include the fact that Davis came within three points of tying. The idea of the record being unapproachable is gone. Maybe some day the extra 8.9 free throws per game that Pete shot will enter the discussion, but if anybody gets close in the future, Antoine's name will be mentioned.
Second, if the Gazelle group negotiated a spot in the CBI for hosting a spot in the Gotham Classic, then we should be able to leverage being able to host one of their tournaments in the near future. There must be something that they can do for us that we would be able to benefit from. The optics of posting their tweets and then pulling away the football like Lucy Van Pelt do not look good. Believe it or not, there are people who think that we were wronged here, and if they want to regain credibility with those people, the Gazelle Group should want to do something positive. Blaming us for our record (that they already knew when they tweeted!) falls short of the mark.
I had booked airfare, hotel and car rental for the 5 days in Florida. I'll stay home and watch the NCAA instead.

We said, "Yes." We were looking for a contract that was a binding invitation from either the CBI or the PS8. We always seemed to be a backup plan for the CBI. It was always phrased to us, "If we invite you, would you agree to come?" "Are you inviting us?" "No, but if we do, would you agree to come?" We were basically a first four out team at the CBI. The PS8 was not able to get 8 teams interested in part because the organizer started late and in part because several teams lost interest in any postseason after they started losing players to the transfer portal right after their seasons ended.

Do we know yet if any Titans are in the transfer portal?

From the Detroit News (subscription required): “Why did Detroit Mercy, Davis get left out? CBI chief 'wrestled with decision'” www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/college/2023/03/13/why-did-detroit-mercy-davis-get-left-out-cbi-chief-wrestled-with-decision/70004172007/A couple excerpts: "You know, when this all sort of came up, we were undecided, and we sort of evaluated it and talked to them a number of times throughout the week," Rick Giles, president of the Gazelle Group, which runs the CBI, said in an interview with The Detroit News on Monday afternoon. "There's not any single one thing that caused us to move forward without them. After just weighing all the different factors, we just decided that we would move forward with the teams that we had.” “Giles, when asked multiple times, denied any influence from third parties. He said the CBI never heard from the NCAA, the family of ‘Pistol’ Pete Maravich, or officials at or alums of LSU, Maravich's alma mater.”

According to my sources, Giles is not telling the truth about "outside influence." Apparently a lot of people have nothing better to do than "protect" the reputation of Pistol Pete, even though his legacy will never be diminished even if/when his record falls. I only hope this serves AD to work even harder to make the NBA. Not sure he could work any harder than he already does, but he certainly has even more motivation now.

On the bright side, we ended the season in the same position as UNC, the preseason #1 team: no tournament berth.

Anyone else think it’s weird that the official CBI Twitter account has made two tweets about the Titans tonight after the loss? Seems a bit unusual. Could be some 23 year old marketing coordinator just messing around. Could mean UDM already had an agreement in principle to play in the CBI should we not make the NCAA. From the 3/13/23 Detroit News article on the CBI’s snub of the Titans: "I don't handle our Twitter account, but I think the tweet was more in response to all of that discussion and maybe to get the discussion going a little bit," Giles said. "I think it was a healthy discussion to have. It was interesting to see how strongly people feel about Pete Maravich and what he accomplished, and equally how strongly people feel about Antoine Davis and everything he accomplished. ... I don't regret that (tweet). I think that was just part of the dialogue that was occurring at that time."
