CBI Scores: Indiana State 67, USC-Upstate 61. Southern Utah 72, North Alabama 50 San Jose State 77, Southern Indiana 52 Charlotte 65, Western Carolina 56. None of the four losers broke .500 against D-1 competition. Southern Indiana was 13-17. Two of them were blown out yesterday. All four entered the game ranked well below Detroit in NET. Meanwhile, had AD played, there would have been relatively considerable coverage earlier this week, and even during yesterday's NCAA coverage it would have been at least briefly noted at some point, "Meanwhile, over in the College Basketball Invitational, Detroit's Antoine Davis today broke Pete Maravich's all-time scoring record ... ." It's not like that would have suddenly sent tens of thousands of fans switching over to FLO Hoops or anything, but it might have helped with some interest in the tournament. Maybe a few would have flipped over. Maybe some Charlotte fans would have said, "that's right, the 49ers play today. I'd forgotten." The CBI is in business to make money--and that means attracting attention, putting on an entertaining tournament that people will watch and care about. Water under the bridge and all, but I can't help but note that they blew it. Announced attendance was 876. It seems (a la the lamented Vegas 16) that the concept of the "destination" third tier tournament just doesn't work. CBI? Never heard of it.

Looking at this CBI nonsense, one of the dumbest business decisions ever made was to not invite UDM. If you like AD breaking Mravich's record or not it was news.

I watched a lot of college basketball coverage yesterday, and followed several online college basketball information sources. Didn't hear or see a single mention of the CBI. You can bet that if Antoine Davis had broken the career scoring record it would have definitely gotten some attention. I can't think of a single good business reason for the CBI to not invite Detroit. If they were influenced by outside parties to not invite Detroit in an effort to preserve the scoring record, whoever made that decision should be fired.

Is there no record that UofD could have had to where the CBI shouldn't have invited us? Would we all be claiming foul had the CBI not invited a 2-31 Detroit Mercy squad? Even a 0-33 squad about to break the record would have made news... so my assumption is that CBI would have been stupid not to invite us in that case either. My only point... is that the CBI shouldnt exist. When you view it in that light, you immediately get less upset that we weren't invited.

My only point... is that the CBI shouldnt exist. When you view it in that light, you immediately get less upset that we weren't invited. In that hypothetical situation, I would say I would not expect the CBI to invite a 2-31 team to the tournament. In fact, if they had never accepted a below .500 team before I wouldn't be speaking negatively about them not inviting Detroit. But they have accepted teams with losing records before, so inviting Detroit would not have been breaking new ground. Also, my comments in my previous post were from a business perspective, not a Titan fan perspective. If you are the CBI and you want eyes, clicks, and attention on your tournament, inviting the Titans seems like a easy decision with no downside. Apparently they are happy with 876 fans in attendance and nobody talking about the tourney execpt the invited school fanbases. I don't mind the CBI, CIT, Vegas 16, etc. I usually don't watch them, unless a team I really like is involved. But their existence doesn't bother me, and if more kids get the opportunity to play and the local economies get some boost, that's fine with me. It's like those minor bowl games that keep popping up.

Fair enough. My thought is that a 14-19 team from a bad conference really doesn't have a leg to stand on. I certainly wish that we'd receive some postseason consideration for a reason other than having a single noteworthy player on our team.
From a business standpoint, you are certainly correct. Inviting Detroit would have made news due to the record. That would be more than they are getting today as I wasnt aware that tournament had started until you noted it had.
I just refuse to be upset. Were we snubbed at 19-14, I may have been... but that wasnt the case.

Scores for March 19, 2023. NCAA and NIT action again.
NCAA TOURNAMENT
Michigan State 69, Marquette 60. The Spartans upset the Big East champs with a tough defensive effort the entire game. A big key late was the play of Mady Sissoko who grabbed 4 rebounds and blocked 2 shots in the last four minutes of the game. Tyson Walker led the way with 23 points and the Spartans defense neutralized Big East Player of the Year Tyler Kolek, who finished with 7 points and 6 turnovers.
Kansas State 75, Kentucky 69. Jerome Tang, an assistant for Baylor last year, takes KSU to the Sweet Sixteen in his first year at the helm. Diminutive point guards (such as myself) rejoiced at the performance of 5-8 point guard Markquis Nowell, who scored 28 points.
Xavier 74, Pittsburgh 83. Congrats to Friar Titan on the Xavier win. Good season for Pitt, who started the season 1-5 but turned things around.
UCONN 70, St. Mary's 55. UConn broke upon a close game with a big second half run.
Creighton 85, Baylor 76. Surprise.
Florida Atlantic 78, Fairleigh Dickinson 70. FAU moves on!
Miami 85, Indiana 69. Miami got off to a fast start, the Hoosiers came back and grabbed a lead, but the Canes had too much.
Gonzaga 84, TCU 81. TCU had the lead at the half, but foul trouble took its toll.
NIT Oregon 68, UCF 54
Utah Valley 81, Colorado 69. UVA has a shiny 27-8 record and picks up a Power 5 scalp in the postseason to go with their non-conference season win over Oregon.
Wisconsin 75, Liberty 71
Oklahoma State 71, Eastern Washington 60. OSU seems to have brought the right attitude to the NIT.
UAB 77, Morehead State 59. Just realized that the three previous stops in Coach Davis's head coaching career made the postseason: IU, UAB, and Texas Southern. Of course, he made the postseason with them as well.
North Texas 75, Sam Houston 55. Good battle between to really good Texas mid majors.

CBI Scores:
Eastern Kentucky 91, Cleveland State 75 (OT). EKU outscored the Vikes 17-1 in the extra period, including the final 15 points.
Milwaukee 87, Stetson 83 (OT). At least some Horizon team won some post-season game. Milwaukee trailed by 9 well into the second half.
Rice 84, Duquesne 78. Radford 72, Tarleton 70 (OT). Tarleton finishes 14-17 against D1 competition, 17-17 overall.
The CBI jacked up attendance to 922. With 3 overtime games, at least the fans got a lot of action for their money.
The average record of the 8 teams that advanced out of the first round is a respectable 22-13. I don't have a problem with such teams getting a little post-season reward after not making the NCAA or NIT.
Back in, say, 1957, 23% of D1 teams played in the NCAA or NIT, both top tournaments. Today, just 19% make the NCAA (the only top tier tournament), and 28% make the NCAA or NIT. Even adding the CBI, just thirty-two percent of D-1 teams (116 of 363) are playing in the postseason. Maybe it should be lower, but I don't think 32% makes the currency too cheap. I don't think it needs to or should be higher, but 35 or 40% wouldn't blow me away. (69% of D1 football teams got a post season bowl, which clearly seems WAY too high.)
The CBI's problem isn't that good teams aren't theoretically available, it's that too many good teams (think, e.g. 24-8 Marshall, 22-12 Dayton, 19-13 UNLV) are no longer interested in the CBI. In its early years teams with top 100 RPI ranks routinely composed half the CBI field, and the field typically included teams from the Pac 10, ACC, Big 10, etc. But it's hard to see the point of continuing on with low major teams that are at or below .500, such as USC-Upstate, North Alabama, Tarleton, and yes, UofD, had we been invited this year.
Go Milwaukee! They're playing it, so HL might as well win it.

If that 922 attendance is collective for all four CBI games (assume that’s the case), must not be the greatest atmosphere. Tickets were only $8. Guess that’s why teams must pay to play.

If that 922 attendance is collective for all four CBI games (assume that’s the case), must not be the greatest atmosphere. Tickets were only $8. Guess that’s why teams must pay to play. Oddly, under the old CBI campus game system, a team with good home attendance could make more money playing in the CBI than in the NIT. Which is one reason why in its early days a few schools chose it over the NIT. I'm pretty sure that the NCAA--which now owns the NIT--used the "pay to play"* slur as part of a pressure campaign (pretty successful) to convince high majors not to play in the CBI. And for what it's worth, I also suspect that one reason the NCAA began giving automatic NIT berths to regular season winners from the small conferences was to kill off the CIT, which specifically limited itself to the smaller conferences. They degraded the NIT field with lower ranked teams in order to further limit and degrade the CIT field. The "pay-to-play*" slur also helped. *Every college team in any sport that isn't making money for the school is "pay-to-play," no? Is the sole purpose of college athletics to directly make money?

Assuming all 922 in attendance paid the full $8, that's $7,376. Just thinking about a business decision, the CBI by not inviting UDM had to be one of the worst business decisions to come along in a while. Basketball junkies would have tuned in just to see him play.

Milwaukee loses to Charlotte by 11 in the tournament whose name shall not be mentioned. I remember watching us beat Charlotte this year and the team was exciting to watch in person. We actual played some defense, if I remember and J. Phillips had a good shooting night. I don't know what happened to him or the team after that win?

MC Sam, the Big East is on fire, 3 Sweet 16's, Georgetown, and St Johns opened up their checkbooks. When is DePaul going to write a check and bring in some coach that can be the "Prince of Chicago"?

Scores for March 19, 2023. Creighton 85, Baylor 76. Surprise. Surprise? Not in my bracket. I nailed that shit. It may be the only Sw16 team I picked right... but that's beside the point. 👍
