I kind of felt the same way for the first game, but felt the second one was a done deal. One thing that was interesting was Miama made U Conn win ugly.

What's to Watch for April 3, 2023.
Tonight is the most bittersweet night of college basketball. Bitter because it means the last game of the season, sweet because a new champion will be crowned. I've got my retro San Diego State t-shirt ready to wear while I watch the game; it's a design used in 1983, the year Smokey Gaines led the Aztecs to an 18-10 record.
9:00 PM CBS 4 seed UConn versus 5 seed San Diego State. UConn is a 7 point favorite. I'm rooting for the Aztecs, but I worry that they won't be able to score enough to keep up with the Huskies.

I was all in on SDSU... until I remembered Micah Parrish was over there. Now I'm torn between rooting for an Ypsilanti kid and they icky feeling I get from rooting for a former Pioneer.

I understand that. It is a dilemma. I heard Steve Fisher interviewed on the radio broadcast the other day. I wish Smokey was still with us. Would have been nice to hear his perspective and see him get a little recognition.

Back in the early 1980s I took a trip to San Diego to visit a high school/U-D buddy who moved out to the west coast. While in town I decided to head over to the San Diego St. campus to check things out. I visited the basketball office (which was in a large trailer) and got a chance to meet with Asst. Coach Mike Brunker (who was also formerly on Dick Vitale’s staff). He was super cordial, gave me a bit of a tour, and we talked for a long time about Titan and Aztec basketball. Unfortunately Smokey Gaines was not in the office that afternoon, but it was still a very memorable visit. Here’s my souvenir from the day, a SDSU media guide.

View AttachmentFeels like San Diego State's rise began with them putting some money into the program, starting with hiring Gaines. However, it took them awhile to upgrade the facilities and really allocate the necessary resources. Like you said, the basketball offices were in a trailer while Smokey was there. Conversely, the Titans program started to fall off for real with the decision to let Gaines go. 😕

Score for April 3, 2023. Championship Night. UConn 72, San Diego State 59. This one went the way that the smart money had it going. The Aztec offensive issues were once again their downfall. They had a ten minute plus stretch in the first half without a field goal, and trailed by 12 at the break. After that, it was all a formality. A late rally cut it to eight, but the Huskies were never in trouble. San Diego State was hoping to become the first mid major team to win a title since UNLV, but instead the Huskies got their fifth title since 1999. That's an amazing run. Predictions of the death of the Big East after the split in 2013 have proven false. And now begins what I like to call The Mean Season: no real college basketball until November. Brace yourselves.

Smokey Gaines had a sister named Ozella who was married to a gentleman named Ed Carter. Ed ran a trucking company called Carter Cartage based in Pontiac. Carter Cartage warehoused and trucked for Singer Furniture.
Smokey would stop by and talk basketball and drop off game tickets all the time. I can tell you he gave the school ample opportunities to come up with a package so he could stay at the U of D, but they never came close
to keeping him.
