MC Sam, the Big East is on fire, 3 Sweet 16's, Georgetown, and St Johns opened up their checkbooks. When is DePaul going to write a check and bring in some coach that can be the "Prince of Chicago"? I think they are willing, especially with the new AD, but they really need to hit a home run with a coaching hire. They need the type of guy who can coach up the guys he has and win some games until he can start turning the program around and getting better players. My dream would have been for Tubby Smith to get the DePaul job when Minnesota fired him, so he could have done at DePaul what he did at Texas Tech. That's the kind of lightning that the Blue Demons need. I think the coach they have is solid, but he's also a first time head coach in a tough rebuild. I keep hoping for a return to the glory days.

Maybe they should gio the route of (too) many these days and hire Mark Aguirre to lead the Blue Demons. He did play second fiddle to Isiah on the Knicks. đ

The Charlotte/Radford game is on ESPN2 right now if anyone is curious what a CBI semifinal game looks like, there might be a couple hundred fans in the arena. Four of the last five games in the tournament have gone to overtime and this one is all knotted up in the second half as I type.

Scores for March 21, 2023. This weekend, after Michigan State beat Marquette, The Commissioner said that Michigan State had done everything right on both ends of the floor down the stretch. In NIT action tonight, it was the exact opposite as the losers in both games blew late leads.
North Texas 65, Oklahoma State 59. (OT) Whew, this was an ugly game. Both teams shot terribly in a game marked by lots of standing around and one on one play. North Texas played less poorly than the Cowboys and got the win. With the victory, the Mean Green (love that nickname) improved to 29-7, continuing a fine season. The Cowboys finish at 20-16. They were the "last team out" of the NCAA tournament.
Me: "That North Texas/OK State game was ugly." Oregon and Wisconsin: "Hold my beer."
Wisconsin 61, Oregon State 58. Poor shooting and stagnant offense aside, this game was decided from the free throw line. The Badgers shot 12-13 while Oregon was only 4-12. That allowed the Badgers to win despite missing 2 out of every 3 field goals they attempted. Wisconsin moves on to the NIT Final Four.
On the plus side, both games were close and went down to the wire, so viewers at least got to enjoy close games, even though they were not well played. In a stat that surprised me to read, Oregon has racked up 30 LOSSES over the past two seasons.

Four of the last five games in the tournament have gone to overtime and this one is all knotted up in the second half as I type. The first game today was another OT affair--in fact, double OT--as Eastern Kentucky (23-13) nipped Southern Utah (24-13) by 108-106. Eastern came from 12 down with 9 minutes to play in regulation. In the first OT Southern got a put back dunk with 1 second left to tie it. Southern Utah tied the 2d OT with a trey with about 8 seconds left, but fouled on the final play and EKU won it on free throws with 1 second left. Say whatever you want, the CBI has had a bunch of games that gave those few fans to show up their money's worth. And the way Southern Utah and EKU played tonight says, yes, there are teams that care about winning the CBI.

Scores for March 22, 2023. NIT Quarterfinals action.
UAB 67, Vanderbilt 59. UAB stays hot, winning their 15th game in their last 17 tries. Vanderbilt tried a late comeback, but unlike the Michigan game, they fell short. The Blazers improve to 28-9.
Utah Valley 74, Cincinnati 68. Former LA Laker Mark Madsen is making a name for himself as the Utah Valley coach. The Wolverines are 28-8, 14-1 at home. Cincinnati falls to 23-15, a nice improvement over last season's 18 wins, but I don't know if they are ready to play in the Big 12 next season.

Scores for March 23, 2023. Sweet Sixteen Action. Teams I wanted to win went 0-4. Kansas State 98, Michigan State 93 (OT). Instant classic game, with both teams making big plays down the stretch. Turnovers were the difference, as MSU committed 13 to KSU's 5. AJ Hoggard led all scorers with 25. Marquis Nowell had 20 points and 19 assists for the Wildcats. UConn 88, Arkansas 65. Wire to wire win for the Huskies. Gonzaga 79, UCLA 76. Gonzaga was down 13 at the half, but a 19-5 run in the second half put them in the lead. UCLA, with two starters missing the game due to injury, ran out of gas in the second half. FAU 62, Tennessee 55. All season long the conceern about the Volunteers was their inconsistent offense. It bit them today. They had big droughts at the end of the first half and for a good chuck of the second half. FAU advances to the Elite Eight. Interesting tidbit from the FAU/Tennessee broadcast. Dusty May, the head coach at FAU, used to be an assistant coach under Mike Davis. May told the CBS crew that after FAU and Detroit played this year, May asked Davis to address his team. Davis was complimentary to the Owls, and told them they had the ability to be a top five team in the country, as long as they believed it and blocked out the outside distractions. The Owls apparently listened.

Marqus Nwwell got behind the MSU defense at will for dunks or layups, MSU never figured that out. Somebody on TV said Nowell beat Kentucky with shooting, he beat MSU with passing.

Scores for March 24, 2023. Sweet Sixteen! Two number one seeds fall. For the first time in tournament history, there will be no 1 seeds in the Elite Eight.
Creighton 86, Princeton 75. The Ivy League run stops here.
Texas 83, Xavier 71. It wasn't that close.
Miami 89, Houston 75. The 'Cane's excellent guard play has served them well the past two post seasons.
San Diego State 71, Alabama 64. The Aztecs have a deep and veteran team. Smokey would be a fan.

Congratulations to Nova SE (FL) who won the NCAA Division 2 men's basketball national championship by defeating West Liberty (WV) 111-101. It was a great game, full of energy and emotion.

Scores for March 25, 2023. Elite 8 action: One nail biter, one blowout.
Florida Atlantic 79, Kansas State 76. The Owls continue to surprise, this time coming up with an impressive win over Kansas State. KSU had a 57-50 second half lead, but FAU went on a 14-1 run to take control. The Conference USA champs move to their first Final Four.
UConn 82, Gonzaga 54. The Huskies only led by 7 at the half, but dominated the second half by a score of 43-22. The Bulldogs shot 7-29 from the floor after the break, and only 2-20 from distance for the game.

Davis quote re: FAU in New York Time Today:
âAfter the Owls beat Detroit Mercy on Nov. 19, Mike Davis, the Titansâ basketball coach, entered the opposing locker room with a message for the team and its coach. Davis has known Dusty May since before May could legally drink, when the Owls coach was a student manager at Indiana and Davis was one of Bob Knightâs assistants.
âWe havenât seen a team like you in years,â Davis told the Owls. âThis group could be special; you guys could go to the Final Four.â
On Saturday, Davis went from basketball coach to prophet. â
NYT/ The Athletic is paywalled tho.
