Central finished the season 10-21, 5-13, failing to make the MAC tournament. Rough season, and they suffered a blow early in the season when their best player, Kevin Miller, was lost for the season to injury after only four games. The high mark of the season was the 63-61 victory over Michigan. Hope for the future came in the form of freshman guard Reggie Bass, who was named MAC Freshman of the Year. Bass averaged 12 points on the season, with a season high of 40 against NIU. Bass was 21-24 from the free throw line in that game. I'm sure the CMU staff is hoping he doesn't hit the portal. Junior guard Jesse Zararuela averaged 16 ppg on the season and should be a key factor returning next year, if he comes back. Edit: Shortly after I posted this, I read that Zararuela had put his name in the transfer portal. Looking for his third college, fifth if you count the two junior colleges he played for. And Reggie joined Jesse in the portal today. π

Skylar Wicks, an 18ppg JUCO guard, committed to CMU on January 24. Looked like a good pick up for the Chips, but today he de-committed. He was nice enough to thank Coach Barbee for the opportunity, however.
Really tough to be a mid major coach in a struggling program these days. CMU was already hurt by transfers, and now this de-commitment hits hard.

Central adds another Canadian kid, 2023 6-6 shooting guard Shaedon Simpson. Simpson had several mid major offers, with the MAC being the highest conference represented among those offers.

CMU adds a JUCO with two years of D1 experience. Jemal Davis, who spent two years at South Carolina State before hitting the portal last year and ending up at Florida Southwestern JUCO, committed to the Chips. Davis started 36 games over two seasons at SC State, averaging roughly 8 points and 5 rebounds per game. He averaged 9 and 4 this past season for Florida Southwestern in only 19 minutes per game. Averaged 1.4 blocks and a steal, also. Measures out at 6-8, 190. Central lost a lot in the portal; they need players. This is a pretty decent pick up, all things considered. www.fswbucs.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/davis_jemal_z5ch

Of course, you never know what drives these decisions.

CMU got a commitment from Paul McMillan IV, a transfer from NJIT. This past season, his freshman year as a Highlander, he appeared in 25 games, logging about 17 minutes per contest. His best looking stat is his 82% free throw shooting on 38 total attempts. Averaged six points per game.

CMU lands a Detroit kid for the class of 2024. Mo Habhab is listed at 6-8. Per Verbal Commits, his other offers were D2 programs.

In Central Michigan's game today against Western Michigan, they are honoring Chip great Melvin "Sugar" McLaughlin. He's one of the best shooters in MAC basketball history.

CMU was the surprise team of the MAC this season, being picked to finish near the bottom of the conference and coming in at 4th in the final standings, just two games out of first. The final record of 18-14, 12-6, was a big improvement over last year's 10-21, 5-13. Head coach Tony Barbee is attempting to do at CMU what he did at UTEP; a steady build up to an NCAA caliber team.
After losing three of their top four scorers to the portal last Spring, the Chips retooled and put together a roster with four players averaging double figures. Leading scorer Anthony Pritchard, a transfer from Tulsa, averaged 13 points, 5 boards, and 5 assists per game. Super Senior Brian Taylor averaged 11 points and 8 boards.
In an era not that long ago, CMU would rightfully be very excited about next season. Taylor was the only senior on the roster, and some young players got valuable experience and could be ready to step up. However, 6-10 junior Markus Harding is hitting the transfer portal after averaging 10 and 5. 6-8 Jemal Davis, who previously played at South Carolina State and saw action in 31 games for the Chips, also hit the portal. We'll see what the rest of transfer season brings, but player retention will be big for CMU.
Fire up, Chips!

This season he got less time, fewer shots, and played on a team that finished well behind CMU in the standings. He entered the portal again last week. Jesse Zarzuela landed at Oregon and scored 10 points per game but only saw action in five games. He missed the rest of the season with an ankle injury. Kevin "Boopie" Miller, who missed most of 2022-23 with an injury, enrolled at Wake Forest. He had an excellent season, averaging 15 ppg as a starting guard on Wake's NIT team. Looks like everything worked out great for him, but he entered the transfer portal again this week. It's a different era in college basketball.
