Good point, Commissioner. Looks like instead of there being an exponential increase in the number of transfers, they've just widened the definition. :-)
I can really only consider the 266 as real transfers, although I'm sure some of the JUCO ones are real transfers as well. Guys who don't want to sit out a year, or transferred too late to latch on to a team they wanted.

www.si.com/college-basketball/2015/07/29/top-100-high-school-recruits-transfer-behavior-studySI tracks Top 100 recruits from classes of 2007 through 2011: 37% of those who did not go "one & done" transferred (33.8% of the total). And the real interesting stat? Over 50% of those in high classes of 2013, 2014, and 2015 played for multiple high schools. Multiple high school players also are more likely to transfer in college. Only about 16% decommitted from a verbal commitment. However, the rate was much higher for early commits. An interestingly, but perhaps not surprisingly, early verbal commits also ended up with a much higher transfer rate.

That's not a destination I would have expected for PJ. Does he have any connections to the staff or anyone on the team? In any case, I hope he ends his career on a high note. I do wish he had remained a Titan. I think his past first attitude and ability to find other players on the court would have benefited the team the past couple of years. Good to see you post, Indy.

That 37% of the "none one and done" top 100 is higher than I would have thought it would be. I think the AAU culture is impacting the high school and the college transfer rate. AAU has such a big influence on these players, and as you know, in AAU guys change teams all the time, sometime in the middle of the season. It's not a surprise that they carry that attitude with them. You even see it in the pros these days, with players trying to team up with their buddies. As the old TV show theme says, "It's a different world from where I come from."

Austin Grandstaff, a freshman guard at Ohio State, is transferring, about ten games into the season. A few things are apparent from reading the article. Based on the quotes of his father, it doesn't appear they made the most informed choice to go to Ohio State, which already had good players at that position. Also, this is a good example of the unrealistic expectations some players can have. AG is a freshman, averaging 11 minutes and four points per game. Is this really the time to throw up your hands and say, "I can't make it here."? In today's basketball world, I guess it is. www.cleveland.com/osu/index.ssf/2015/12/freshman_guard_austin_grandsta.html

ESPN Classic showed a college basketball game between Ohio State and Michigan yesterday. Vitale was doing the commentary, and he was railing against the large number of athletes who decide to pack up and transfer as soon as things get a little tough. The telecast was from 1988.
On another note, it sounded hypocritical for Vitale to say stuff like that back then, and it still sounds hypocritical for him or anyone else to rail against the student athletes if they are quiet on coaches moving from place to place.

Connar Tava averaged 12 points and six rebounds per game for WMU. He's leaving as a graduate transfer. Not a surprise, given today's climate, but what is a surprise is the destination: Boston College. BC was winless in the ACC this past season. When you are a mid major coach who loses one of his best players to perhaps the worst power five team in basketball, you've got to be discouraged. Verbal Commits @verbalcommits 13h13 hours ago Former Western Michigan F Connar Tava is transferring to Boston College. Eligible immediately. (HT @scoopips) verbalcommits.com/players/connar-tava …

Mid majors still getting killed by the grad transfers. Pryor averaged 18 ppg for Robert Morris last year.

It took awhile but the NCAA finally closed the hardship waiver transfer. Let's hope thr graduate transfer rule is eventually rescinded as well.

Another grad transfer going from mid major to high major. I'm with Larry; I'd like to see some changes in the grad transfer rule. While it probably had good intentions, that rule has become part of the college basketball free agency system.
Jon Rothstein @jonrothstein Columbia transfer Grant Mullins visits Cal today after visiting Syracuse over the weekend. Immediately eligible. Averaged 13.1 PPG.

These are tough questions. In one sense, why shouldn't athletes be able to transfer and play when and where they want? The NCAA's rules are blatantly paternalistic. But is paternalism all that bad all the time? The reason that transfers are required to sit a year is to prevent poaching, but also to make sure that students transfer for academic reasons. Everybody hates the NCAA's paternalism, except when they don't. The reasons for having the transfer redshirt year apply with equal force, I think, to the grad transfer rule. Sure, there are cases where a player wants to start pursuing a grad degree not available at his undergrad institution, but really? How often is that really the case with these grad transfers? And overt poaching is back in style. Soon good players at a mid-majors will demand that they be redshirted as a condition of signing--that way they'll have the possibility of an easy move to a high major for their final year.
To a substantial extent, the question has almost become, should the NCAA just throw in the towel on the student-athlete stuff and treat itself as semi-pro league organized to feed the NBA and NFL? Or should it continue its efforts, often incomplete or contradictory, sometimes wrong-headed, spotty in enforcement, frequently pilloried by journalists, and hampered by the courts, to keep some vision of the concept of student-athlete?

Saw this guy up close at Calihan last year. He struggled against us, and regressed overall from his freshman year. Still, he's got a lot of high major interest.
Jon Rothstein @jonrothstein 2m2 minutes ago UCF transfer Adonys Henriquez told @cbssports he will visit Pitt on Wednesday & SLU next weekend. Visits Utah next Monday. TCU also in mix.
